Up all night

Our dog Maggie, who is our first baby girl, was in a lot of pain last night for some unknown reason. She was having difficulty sitting and moving in certain ways and would yelp in pain. We thought that she had pulled a muscle and she would feel better after a nights sleep to rest her leg but she woke us up at 2:30 am yelping in pain. She did not want to leave my side and was shaking from being scared. She is generally pretty tough and never yelps. She has torn her dew claw several times and didn't miss a beat so we figured whatever she had was definitely terribly painful and more than a pulled muscle.
I lay on the floor with her all night wide awake just reassuring her that she would be okay and that we would see her doctor in the morning. Every time she yelped my heart sank. I could not wait until morning so we could take her to the vet. She stayed right by my side every minute. When I got into the shower I thought she would just lay on the floor in the bathroom, but the next thing I knew she was in the shower with me getting soaked and yelping from the pain because jumping made it worse. She just gave me the saddest looks.
Our vet could definitely see that she was in a lot of pain. He found her joints and muscles to be just fine and her spine was just fine, so he ruled out joint or disc trouble. There was one area on her left rear thigh that was extremely tender when touched or moved a certain way, but not when weight bearing. Because it was so localized he believes she was bitten by something, perhaps a Copperhead snake, he has seen a lot of them this year all ready. Even though I forbid snakes to reside anywhere near my property it is possible that one Copperhead didn't get the memo. If it wasn't that, then maybe a spider bite, either way he gave her antibiotic and anti-inflammatory meds as well as a shot for pain. He said she should be better by tomorrow but if not call him. Bill stayed home with her all day and she seems a little better tonight but still has pain when getting up and down. We will give her some Benedryl tonight to help her relax and sleep well. I'm not used to being up all night and functioning during the day, so I could use some sleep as well. I guess she is breaking me in for when Olivia is sick and I need to be up all night with her. Aah, the joys of Motherhood.

Oh, poor baby. It is so hard to see them in pain and you don't know why or how to help. I hope she is better tomorrow.

Thank you Shannon for the great idea of filming the DVD while it plays!! This will have to do until I get the proper program. The quality is not very good doing it this way but it's better than nothing.
